What's Up Kayla
New releases, previews, appearances and comedy.
Long time no see, right? That’s presuming your only way of following me is through this newsletter which hasn’t had an edition in a fair few months. Essentially I had a lot of different balls in the air and a monthly blog got the least attention.
In the time since we last spoke I’ve finished first drafts on both Mechritter (my side of the writing at least) and A Fistful of Stars. After editing I’ll begin putting Mechritter stuff into layout bit by bit. I also released The Gallant and the Virtuous earlier than anticipated, it’s available both digitally and physically and I’ve been very pleased with the positive response it’s received.
Also this year I’ve made a return to stand-up comedy despite my inability to stand. There’s part of me that thinks it’d be sensible to split up my social media accounts for stand up and RPG stuff, especially seeing as they’re under two different names (comedy under my shoot name of Kayla MacQuarrie). I’m not sure how much of a crossover is between those two audiences which and maybe some followers will find the mix irritating. I’m not going to do that. I understand how it could be frustrating, but I honestly don’t care enough to have that influence my behaviour. I already find social media a frustrating endeavour so I won’t double that work as it would simply mean it won’t be completed.
I’ve been posting some clips over on YouTube, Insta and TikTok. I probably won’t devote much newsletter space to plugging gigs if they’re mainly open spots. I’m still in a phase where I’m figuring out how many accessible gigs there actually are as well as how much energy I have to spend. However I will shout out right now that I’ll be performing at Laugh-Able on the 20th of May.
Having completed two big pieces of writing and while feeling physically low energy I decided to spend my attention on a small new project. It’s a game I mentioned in my year end review post, when it was just an idea. It’s a game with the working title of Our Destroyer, it’s a two part giant monster rpg. Part One focuses on the investigation of a strange incident, PCs will find evidence pointing towards a giant monster and must try to warn their city. Part Two features the attack of the monster they speculated about and players rotating through various POVs to explore how the city fares against this incarnation of devastation. Earlier today I uploaded a playable preview of the game in a plain text format to my Patreon.
I have a lot of business coming up. There’s the various conventions I’m going to mention shortly, as well as remaining work for Mechritter and any revisions on Fistful, in addition to hopefully performing more frequently. So I’m unsure what pace the development of Our Destroyer will be. I’d want to test it to see if it works like I’m intending, especially on a tonal level. Then beyond there’s the question of which physical form would be best, perhaps similar to the musical trilogy last year I’d expect the digital release to come with a bigger gap before the physical.
Ok, so we’re nearly done, but I’m sure you’re all wondering where you can find me selling books over the next couple of months. Up first, if you’re local to SE London/Kent I’ll be taking part in an Indie Bazaar at the Priory Shopping Centre tomorrow, facilitated by House of Stars.
After that I’ll be at UK Games Expo with 12 Pins Press. We’re in Hall 3 in the area marked on the map as Three Kobolds Avenue. Brand new to UKGE I’ll have I’m with the Damned & Other Games and The Gallant and the Virtuous, as well as old favourites like PSYCHODUNGEON.
In June I’ll be attending Bardscon at the Bardswell Social Club in Brentford. I have a few copies of To Embrace a Swamp Creature left over so I’m considering bringing them for the Essex home crowd, as well as selling all the hits I’ll also have some on-stall demos.
Then in August I’ll be at Norwich Games Con, and though I know I’ll end the year with Dragonmeet I’m unsure if there’ll be any more places I’m popping up between August and December. Hopefully I’ll keep the mailing list in the loop as anything new gets confirmed.
See you around, you’ve got plenty of chances after all.
